The Dordogne is famous for its gastronomy, its green surroundings, its charming villages, its heritage and its many prehistoric caves. Indeed, the department shelters several fabulous sites, in particular in the Périgord Noir, which one can visit and thus, to leave to discover a part of our history. Emblematic sites in the history of the Dordogne

Testimonies of prehistoric age, the first traces of human life and the evolution of Man, the caves allow us to dive into the heart of prehistoric times. In the Périgord Noir, in the Dordogne, there is a fine sample of sites, some of which are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And there are certainly more to discover ! Most of them can be visited, revealing their charms and particularities such as stalactites, stalagmites, concretions and drawings, carving and painting (ex bison friezes). Getting around is a real source of wonder and discovery for young and old.

Our selection of places to discover in Sarlat and the surrounding area

To help you with your visits, we have selected for you several prehistoric caves open to the public in the Périgord Noir. They are all more or less close to Sarlat and our campsite in the Dordogne. So you can access it easily and quickly. We recommend :

the Cave of the Sorcerer of Saint-Cirq which is nestled in the hollow of the cliff and surrounded by greenery and where you can admire frescoes ;
those of Cougnac to Payrignac, where illustrations of animals and human figures tell the story of Cro-Magnon’s men ;
the cave of Font de Gaume in Eyzies-De-Tayac-Sireuil where you find more than 200 figurations painted and engraved ;
that of Bara-Bahau au Bugue, which is classified as a Historic Monument ;
the shelter of Cap Blanc in Marquay which is full of sculptures and whose discovery dates back to 1908 ;
and the most famous, Lascaux, an exact three-dimensional copy of the original which has been closed to the public since 1963.
