Discover Monbazillac and its world famous castle!

Monbazillac is first of all a commune of the Purple Perigord, dominating the valley of the Dordogne and located at about ten kilometers from Bergerac. His castle in the Dordogne is world famous and classified as a historical monument.

THE ORIGIN OF THE CASTLE

It is from 1550 that Charles d’Aydie undertakes the construction of a castle on a simple base of a rectangle with, at each extremity, a large circular tower.
Built on the slopes of Monbazillac, the access to the castle is by a fixed bridge.
Everything is planned in case of an enemy attack: loopholes, machicolations, a covered way and a well hidden inside one of the rooms are the main medieval defensive systems.
Its architecture evolves over the centuries and with the change of owners, and takes on the appearance of a Renaissance castle.
The French Revolution did not cause any damage, the castle is preserved in full.
In the 1960s, when it was bought by the Cave coopérative de Monbazillac, the château was transformed into a museum and the 25 hectares of vines surrounding it were exploited.
Today, the wine of Monbazillac is famous for its sweet sweet white side.
